Poolside Yoga with Fancy Hippies!

30 May

Admittedly, I am not a hippie. I also do not do yoga. But alas, I have some really cool readers. And I would bet a whole load of you really cool readers are hippies and/or do yoga. I mean, for heavens sake, this is Miami. However, the real question is, are you above and beyond cool that you’ve done yoga, poolside, with the founder of Fancy Hippie brand??? Probably not BUT that could change.

This Saturday, June 1st, Four Seasons Hotel Miami is hosting a poolside yoga class with Fancy Hippie founder and South Florida yoga teacher Marcie Wingate. The 75-minute class: Finding your Balance, starts at 9:00 am and combines Vinyasa yoga and Meditation for all ages and skill levels. Open to the public, the cost is $25, which includes a day pool pass for Four Seasons Hotel Miami. Pre-register at http://marciewingatepoolyoga.eventbrite.com.

Fancy Hippie is a lifestyle brand that’s goal is to focus on obtaining balance. The company was formed by a simple thought during a powerful Savasana, where good things begin. The brand promotes balance as a journey, not a destination. The balance of mind, body, spirit. A universal concept and connection.

Be SUPER COOL, fulfill your life dream, and, like, go.

Crazy Dreams, youthH20 rocks Brickgals’ World

1 Sep

When mis compadres jumped on the “disgusting drink in a small bottle” train several years ago, I was like no bueno, I’ll take a rum and diet if I want to energize myself. 5 Hr Energy blah blah blah, it even has repulsive packaging. No thanks. This all changed just two and a half weeks ago, so here’s my story…

Now I’ve never been one to self medicate or “experiment” to have fun, so when everyone and their mom jumped on the monkey and mushrooms thang, I had to politely decline. I guess I missed out on some mind-blowing “experiences.”

Doubtful, I got youthH20. When BrickGuy James introduced me to youthH20 a couple weeks again, I sent it back to him (and gave him some bs story about the wrong address 🙂 ). But then after he sent it again, I guess I had to try it. They aren’t essentially energy shots but rather wellness supplements so I took the plunge. You’re suppose to take the supplements once a day, for 5 days a week, for 3 weeks and then take a break for 7-10 days, which allows the body to produce its own nutrients, promoting natural stability and internal balance.

I was on my way to the Jason Aldean/Luke Bryan concert when I had my first mini bottle – PUKE. I immediately thought the next three weeks would be torture and that James was lucky I already promised him that I’d take them for the full three weeks.

The next time, and the next time, on and on, these youthH20 bottles tasted better and better until I began to look forward to my shot every day. So now you ask why the hecht i started this post out talking about mind-blowing experimentation. I’ve been having trouble sleeping for several months now, not sure whether it’s stress at work or the summer camp feeling I get when spending the night at my boyfriend’s (yea, he shares a ROOM with his brother, like bunk bed style). About 10 days after I started taking youthH20, I was sleeping like a baby and legit having the craziest f-in dreams I’ve ever had in my life. (I’ve confirmed the dream thing with several others taking youthH20 – which launches tomorrow at Navarro Pharmacies- so its a fact.)

THE END

About youthH20 – Comprised of 100% natural ingredients, vitamins, minerals and absolutely zero caffeine, youthH2O is a 2oz shot that delivers ongoing results, not a short-term fix like other products on the market. Taken once daily over 5 days, for 3 weeks, the effects of Youth H2O are felt within a few days and noticeable results in 2 weeks. Unlike caffeinated shots, users don’t end up back where they started; with youthH2O, it’s progress everyday.

Those who use youthH2O cite increased energy, enhanced mood & libido, improved metabolism, restful sleep, and ongoing feelings of health and well-being.

(disclaimer: Yea bitch I got them for free. Doesn’t mean I need to write nice things.)

Get SunSmart 5K This Weekend!

4 Apr

While D4C is everyone’s thing, E4C (otherwise known as Exercise for Charity) just might not be.  Well, guess what BrickGals?  I don’t give a crap.  Just like I tell my little high school lacrosse girls everyday, “I don’t want to hear excuses and I definitely don’t want to see anyone whining.”  When BrickGal Jen calls me and says “Yo, BrickGal Meg, I need you to run a 5K for me this weekend.”  I say, “Shittt, yo I gots you.”   Who knows if I’ll make it running the whole way (haha syke I don’t walk… unless the BF can’t make it those 3.2 miles), but I’m sure going to try.

So let me give ya the deets, besides the fact that Sebastian the Ibis and Dolphins cheerleaders will be in house, there will be free food and you can meet BrickGal Meg (whoa, those four glasses of red wine are getting to my head)…

The 3rd Annual Golden Key Gets SunSmart 5K is being held this Saturday, April 7th in Crandon Park South on Key Biscayne.  The event supports two great causes: melanoma awareness and Miami’s TEAM FOR LIFE. T4L is an Automated External Defibrillator Public Access to Defibrillation Program that helps make defibrillators available in public and/or private places in Miami in order to improve survival rates of those who suffer a cardiac arrest (think, when BrickGal Jen walks by and stops the hearts on those BrickGuys, they live… YAY!).  In addition, UM (University of Miami) Dermatologists will be giving free skin cancer screenings in booths on site.

BrickGal Becky's Most Recent Facebook Profile Pic... She's ready to run.

Oh, and BrickGuys, why should you do it?  Well besides the fact that you get a free tshirt, that hot little tart BrickGal Becky has already informed me she’ll be kicking your ass in only a sports bra.

Check out www.goldenkey5k.com to learn more and to register! Cost is $15 for UM students and $20 for non-students.  Race starts at 8 am, and registration at 6:30.

Diggin’ the Digits

23 Jan

Within the next few weeks, I want to start breaking down some of the ‘must knows’ of Brickell spots for newbies to the area (and some of you Brickell veterans who maybe missed it).  Today’s post is on keeping a BrickGals’ digits dainty.

Brickell Nail SalonI’ve been going to Spa & Nail Fever in Mary Brickell Village for awhile now, but, after some less than awesome experiences, I decided to test out Brickell Nail Spot.  Located next to Tobacco Road, Brickell Nail Spot is a cute salon decked in lime green walls (a BrickGal fav color) and abstracty art work.  I went on a Friday and was the only patron in the place.  I enjoyed the calmness, a welcome respite from S&NF.

Brickell Nail Spot does everything right.  My gel powder nails ($35) were done fantastic, and they played some awesome pop-y house, think Calvin Harris & Rihanna, Adele remix, etc.  My technician Kim was the first technician I actually ever wanted to talk to in a salon (normally I prefer to sit in silence and critique their every move in my head).  She allowed me to make ‘important’ text messages to plan my evening, and grabbed me some water when I was a little coughy from the nail filer.  And, when I stupidly forgot some cash for tip, they let me add it on to my credit card even though they have a sign that says “tip in cash only.”  Amazeee!  Point of note, the owner (who during my visit was maning the phones and desk) is one hot piece.   Slam shot!  I will definitely be coming back again and again!

BrickGals’ Cessie Takes On CrossFit Vida Brickell 90-Day Paleo Challenge

3 Oct

I started Crossfit back in May- with lots of skepticism, but lots of excitement as well. I had heard so much about it and figured I had to give this latest craze a try and see what it was all about! For a while I had been stuck. My normal workout routine reached a plateau and I wasn’t losing or gaining- I was basically stuck. Desp for a change, I tried Crossfit Vida Brickell. Who the heck knew I’d end up hating in and loving it all at the same time.CrossFit Vida Brickell

And so Brickgal Megan and I embarked on the notorious 90-Day Paleo/Crossfit Challenge, which has turned out to be the hardest damn challenge I have ever taken on in my life. Not just because I was practically married to dairy, but I’ve learned to manage my weight by eating anything I want- as long as I control my portions and get in some cardio. So, losing the cardio, lifting some major weight and eliminating cheese and grains were a major shocker for me- not to mention extremely hard to maintain.

While the truth is I did Paleo half assed – I stuck to it during the week but on weekends I ate whatever I wanted. In the beginning I was attending Crossfit Vida Brickell 4-5 times a week, but with my travels and long work days, on some weeks I was only able to go maybe 3 to 4 times. But, as the weeks went by I started to love Crossfit – and my body totally started to crave it whenever I missed it. And yes, Brickgals, I grew a love for wall balls and burpees- and of course, Double-Unders.

Paleo has been and continues to be a challenge for me, mainly because I love food- all kinds of food too damn much! And I don’t like feeling restricted when it comes to a diet- and that’s what Paleo makes me feel- restricted. But, numbers don’t lie- and when the results where in- well the truth of the matter is this: You want to tone up, get healthy, gain strength, lose inches and get leaner- Crossfit & Paleo work. LEGIT. And that’s the truth.

Even though I know I didn’t follow Paleo the way I should’ve and despite the fact I didn’t attend Crossfit as much as I should’ve- I still lost 1.5% of body fat!  I’ve lost so many inches and gotten so much more leaner- the fact that I actually gained weight in the beginning was frustrating, but fitting into size 4 after being sized for a 6 back in April made it all worth while!

So, Crossfit Vida Brickell is def going to continue to be a part of my life- I can’t imagine going back to a regular gym- ever. It seems like such a waste. Yeah its hard, and yeah you have to be dedicated, and yes- chipping my nails and having to wash my hair every other day sucks- BUT- none of those compare to the amazing feeling of looking and feeling better! So, head over to Crossfit Vida Brickell and don’t forget to mention the Brickgals sent you for $25 off your first month!

BrickGals 90-Day Paleo/Crossfit Challenge Results

26 Aug

When I started Crossfit just under four months ago, I had no friggin’ idea what I was getting myself into.  After rambling about the workout regime, wanting to get fit and hot guys (hold up, hot guys?  I’m there.), BrickGal Cessie convinced me to try what I thought was just a new fad (love trends, but was all about the new hot guys to be honest).

Within a 24 hr turnaround period of first hearing of this Crossfit, I was now embarking on some sort of 90-Day Paleo/Crossfit Challenge.  I’m always up for a good challenge but, come on, working out on the regs and no pizza? bread? cheese? salt? The last restriction intimidated me the most.  I mean, how would I be able to do Friday and Saturday tequila shots without the regularly accompanied lime and SALT????

Well, as I mentioned in an earlier post, when two close friends of mine skeptically told me I wouldn’t be able to stick with it for 3 months, I was IN.  For close to 3.5 months, I’ve gone to 4-5 classes a week at Crossfit Vida Brickell. Working my butt off daily, knocking out burpees, pullups and wall balls, became a necessity to feel good as opposed to a hindrance in my daily schedule.

Eating healthy became a craving too (much better for me then downing those glasses of Red Diamond Merlot nightly!).  To be completely honest, I occasionally indulge in some pizza (which of course then I regret 20 minutes later) but I’ve been pretty good with the paleo eating.  I’ve always loved to cook (mostly calorie imploded chicken enchiladas and a Santa’s Surprise with cream of mushroom sauce that’s not to be believed) but now I’ve expanded my repertoire with the likes of a chicken chili soup (heaven) and an almond butter satay thai stirfry with zuchinni “pasta”.  My dinner guests certainly appreciate all the new recipes!

Results of this 90-Day Crossfit/Paleo Challenge, you ask?  In addition to new friends and hot guy crushes at the Box, I pretty much dominated  BrickGal Cessie in our internal BrickGals competition (not sure how we both did in the challenge with the rest of the gym but will keep you posted). Even though I have been monitoring my weight (which is a big “no no” for this type of workout as you’re constantly turning fat into muscle – thus gaining weight), I was anxious to receive the results from a body scan done both back and May and earlier this week.  With friends giving me compliments on the regs these days, I knew I lost some lbs and looked good.  And being able to lift some weight on a bar and jump on a 20” box (I’ll probs never be able to conquer double unders like BrickGal Cessie), I was pretty sure I gained some muscle and toned up.  I knew I was more physically fit, and just like Jesse Spano (sans crazy pills), “I’m so excited!”  I won’t tell you BrickGal Cessie results (her recap to come next week), I am ecstatic to report that I have lost 8 lbs and  close to 5% body fat.  I’ve fo sho leaned up and definitely look a hecht of a lot better in a bathing suit.

So my BrickGals, I am confident that if you want to get more fit and tone up (as opposed to looking waif) Crossfit Vida Brickell should be your next stop.  If you’re new to the area – or maybe you just don’t like your current group of friends (J/K) , the Box is an excellent way to meet new peeps.  If your looking to challenge yourself, get ready because Crossfit won’t disappoint.  If you want to find a hotass boyfriend, Crossfit is a necessary extracurricular.  If you want to feel the best you ever have in your entire life (and this is coming from a lifelong athlete), Crossfit is your jam.

**Mention BrickGals for $25 off your first month.

My Double Unders kick your Double-Unders’ ASS!

9 Aug

That’s right Brickgals! I do admit defeat when I must. And yeah, most of these Crossfit chicks can kick my ass at pretty much everything. But the one thing I am def #winning in (a la Charlie Sheen) is that most of these chicks can’t  do legit Double Unders even if they’re Paleo Life depended on it.

You heard right, my Double Unders blow lots of these Crossfit Chicks outta the water! They can snatch, but I can Double Under til I turn Pink! I guess being in the Jump Rope team back in elementary school paid off! I mean not only did Mr. Vercoe (my favorite P.E. Coach EVER in the HISTORY of P.E. coaches) lead us to the Dade County Youth Fair, year after year, only to come out winning in first place almost every time-but it turns out he helped mold me 20 years later into the star jump roper I still am! SIGH- such wonderful Double Dutch  memories from our PSN jump rope team.

Double Unders are just one of the many of my “Crossfit Favs”- over the last couple of weeks I’ve learned to discover which exercises I actually get excited to see on the daily WOD (800 meter runs, push ups, air squats, burpees, wall balls and sit ups) and which moves I could seriously never lose an ounce of sleep if I never saw again (Australian ring pull ups, overhead squats, snatches, dead-lifts and hand stand push-ups).  Not that the ones I love are easy, because in no way is there ANYTHING at Crossfit that is easy, but these are the ones I enjoy the most, because they combine cardio I love to run) with movements that work my overly developed (fat) areas.

What  I love the most about Crossfit is the new friends I’ve made that have not only helped and cheered me on, making me push it to the limit (You peeps know who you are)-THANK YOU! We’ve swapped tips, shared recipes, laughed, socialized and positively reinforced one another. What I love least about Crossfit is the holes in my hands (I bought cute Pink gloves to fix that) ruining my perfectly blow dried hair on a Monday (nothing a little baby powder can’t fix),  and the occasional manicure glitch  (today I hurt my finger and cracked my nail doing overhead squats). But as with everything in life, the pain is worth the gain!!!

I’ve lost so many inches and gotten so much leaner (thank you Paleo). Even though I do allow occasional cheat (my recent weekend included some Coal Fired Pizza and some Chinese Fried Rice)-believe me, I pay the price for it later. The weeks I am super strict, I perform much better, and feel much better before, during and after my workout.  The times I cheat, I don’t do as well ( I got major cramps during my run today). So I’ve truly witnessed the difference good nutrition has made in my own body.

If this isn’t convincing enough, a few months ago I had gotten fitted for a bridesmaid dress I need to wear in October. The measuring tape at Alfred Angelo said my measurements were between a 4 & a 6 back in April. I took the risk, ordered the 4 and prayed. I recently picked up my dress and its a PERFECT fit. No alteration needed whatsoever. I am a 4!!-And that makes all the holes in my hands, sweat in my hair and chipped polish worth every second. So, in the words of JBerg- GET SOME! Head to Crossfit Vida ASAP and tell them the Brickgals sent you- for $25 off your membership! Life is too short to be fat! Get to it!!

Give Me MO, Miami

2 Aug

At times like these, I just have to quote my lifemate Miss Britney Spears, “Gimme Gimme More.”  No, give me absolutely zero more of freakin’ The Bachelorette and Ashley not choosing Ben.  RIIII-DICULOUS.  What I need, is some mo of the Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Miami.

Hibiscus Tea

Last night, I took it upon myself to test out the Spa at our very own Mandarin Oriental on Brickell Key (yes, I know, it was a tedious task).  Coincidentally, I bought my mother a massage at the spa last Christmas and she gave it rave reviews.  The second I walked into the spa and candlelit reception area I was literally transposed into a serene haven.  I mean as a BrickGal I knew I was a good daughter, but goodness gracias, that woman has got it good with having me as her spawn!

I’ve told you all before that I’m a big spa snob (sorryyyy!) but it benefits my BrickGals to give you all the scoop.  I arrived a good 30 minutes before my treatment so I could fully relax after a long day at work. Unlike at some spas where you’ll sit in the reception area for a dandy long time, I was immediately handed my hibiscus tea and cool towel (necessity after walking the bridge in this summer humidity).  A few moments later, I was asked to swap my sandals for the spa’s (I’m not quite sure I understand this step :|) and ushered by the sweet spa receptionist to the women’s locker room.  I heart spa water features, fact, and the sauna at the spa was fuego (hot, that is).  Perfect temperature.

Relaxation Lounge

After sweating out my toxins and hitting up the steam room, I journeyed to the Relaxation Lounge to await my therapist.  Not gonna lie, I could have sat in the lounger for a good couple hours.  It was so calming with the waterfall and the raspberry tea.  Banana chips and almonds were also available to snack on.

Now just let me get into the massage.  My therapist started by explaining the spa’s signature scent line of custom-blended essential oils, created uniquely for Mandarin Oriental.  The relaxing scent was my choice (because lord knows I needed it), so now it was time to get down to business.  When I first met my petite therapist, I didn’t think there was a chance in hell that she would be able to provide the pressure to which I’m normally accustomed.  WRONG!  The massage was sooooo amazing and deep.  I’ve been super sore from crossfit so I asked my masseuse to focus on the lower back (maybe i should just drop my weights when i’m done a rep??)  After 50 minutes of back, arms, legs and neck (omg heavenly) I emerged from Mandarin Oriental, Miami spa a completely new woman.

After the complete experience I had, it’s not difficult to see why the Spa at the Mandarin is the only spa in Florida that’s been awarded the Five Stars from Forbes Travel Guide. No flash and super modern design needed here, luxury is in the details and service and in this BrickGal’s opinion, this spa is one of the quintessential luxury spas in North America.

Spa Entrance

Woo Woo BrickGals, you’re lucky! You have una mas month to reap the benefits of Miami Spa Month! A Restorative Massage (winner), Reviving Facial or Anti-Aging Mani-Pedi ($99) are all offered for us chicas looking to turn back time on the sun damage caused by all those weekend pool parties! Valet parking is complimentary.  享受 (aka Enjoy)!

Laxin' It Up

Growing up an athlete (year-round travel teams and college laxer what what), competition has always been an integral part of my life.  It’s been a driving force behind not only fitness but also personal success.  Due almost entirely to my desire to dominate the industry and out excel everyone else, I’ve been pretty successful in the travel PR scene (not to toot my own horn).   On the other hand, I’ve had such a diff time keeping motivated to stay in shape since graduating from the U.  I’ve always been so against the Miami vision of body hotness, pontificating (yup i figured i needed to use this word more in my vocab after being reminded of it on Drop Dead Diva this past Sunday) that I’m not going to deprive myself of food happiness and kill myself in the gym to look like Gisele (props to the girlies who don’t need to).  I need motivation.

A couple months ago I hadn’t heard of crossfit, thought P90X was for geek types threatened by meatheads in the gym, yoga was for those South Beach stretchers and the only competition I could find was kickball.  Needless to say, although I love it, kickball doesn’t exactly make world class athletes.

Knowing I was in a rut (aka maybe she saw I had packed on a couple lbs), mi compadre suggested I try out Crossfit.  It was the beginning of a 90 day challenge which consisted of not only crossfit but also a paleo diet plan.  After two of my other besties said I wouldn’t be able to hang, I was on a mission.  Someone telling me I can’t do something is like giving Joe Gorga a dare, thy will be done (hence crossdressing during a recent episode of RHONJ).  Well suck it non-believers, I’ve stuck with it.  Even though I’m one week away from the end of the competition, after hearing constantly how good I look (and how much weight I’ve lost), I’m hooked on crossfit and continuing this competition personally for an indefinite time to come.  Each day is a competition, not only with myself but also with my classmates (who I loveeeee) and those other crossfitters in the earlier classes (everyone posts their times/rounds depending on the WOD).

Crossfit Vida Brickell 2011 Crossfit Games

Shout out goes to the Crossfit Vida team who are competing this weekend at the Reebok 2011 Crossfit Games in Cali.  Holy s* bombs.  I’ve checked out the workouts online and they look tough as nails.

Can’t make it to Cali and want to see what Crossfit competition is all about???  On Sunday, August 28th, Crossfit Vida is hosting the 1st annual Summer Crush Games at Magic City Casino.  The event will feature over 200 crossfitters from all over the world participating in four divisions – Scaled Male, Scaled Female, Male Rx and Female Rx (scaled means less weight then RX aka prescription).  Oh yea, and if hottie mcbody guys running all over the place isn’t enough, the Miami food trucks will be there. BAM!
